On 23 October 1924, The Daily Mail published an explosive article.

‘CIVIL WAR PLOT BY SOCIALISTS’ MASTERS’ was being splashed across their front page just days before the 1924 UK election.

Considered a critical election for the very heart and soul of the English peoples. And there were further alarming headings:

‘MOSCOW ORDERS TO OUR REDS’

‘GREAT PLOT DISCLOSED YESTERDAY’.

The Daily Mail was revealing the existence of a letter, supposedly from Grigory Zinoviev, the Russian chairman of the Soviet Communist International Organization, to the British Communist Party.

In the letter, the Russian chairman urged his British ‘comrades’ to infiltrate the Labour Party – then in government – and take power.

It was a rallying cry for revolution – for an armed insurrection.

Sound familiar?

Remember, the Russian revolution, where the ‘Commies’ really did take power had taken place only a few short years before in 1917.

Reds under the bed. They were everywhere. Enough to put fear right into the hearts of the ruling elite in the UK.

It’s still happening. Nothing new I guess.

Was it a real letter? Or was the opposing side of politics trying to influence the outcome of the up-coming election with a well-timed ‘revelation’.

100 years is a long time ago, but The Zinoviev Controversy Resolved by John Symons has close parallels with events today. By comparing the Zinoviev letter’s impact on politics and media in the 1920s with contemporary issues, we can highlight the timelessness of these challenges and the importance of media literacy, critical thinking and institutional safeguards in protecting democracy.

On the centenary of the plot, October 2024, Shepheard-Walwyn is offering 50% discount on our book that claims the letter was not a forgery.

It makes for interesting reading.

This book, “…is a work of history, and the facts are here for all to see. It also offers, by revealing the truth, healing for the wounds caused by those events in our country’s life, a way to put to rest a national tragedy after a century.”
