Tom Burgess is the Executive Director of the Progressive Policy Unit, a non-partisan political advocacy group. Formerly CEO of an international communications firm, journalist, broadcaster and lecturer; he is a long-time political activist – former full time student leader, and a founding member of the Social Democratic Party, editor of a political newspaper and has twice stood for public office.
The businesses he founded operated in 80 countries for clients such as Acer, Amstrad, British Telecom, Novell, Sage and Regus as well as for the Republic of Ireland and the State of California. He has been recognised for his “vision and initiative to create, develop and sustain successful business ventures” when he was awarded Highly Commended as one of six finalists in the 2002 Entrepreneurial Director of the Year sponsored by the Institute of Directors. He founded Savemoneynow, an independent online price comparison service for household bills, named Website of the Week by The Times newspaper.

Tom is the son of the economist, Dr Ronald Burgess who was Director of the Economic Study Association and author of the book Public Revenue without Taxation. Tom holds a BA Honours in Public Administration and is a member of the Royal Economic Society and the Commonwealth Club of California. He has three grown up children living in London and Sydney, who all work in media and marketing.
