Polly Higgins was a barrister, author and Chairwoman of the Eradicating Ecocide Global Initiative. She co-founded the Earth Law Alliance and was a leading advocate for Earth law. She spent much of her time writing, speaking and advising on an international law of Ecocide. She advised at all levels: governmental, legal and non-legal. Polly died at aged 50 in April 2019.
In April 2010 a fully drafted proposal was submitted into the United Nations by Polly. This proposal is set out in full in her first book Eradicating Ecocide: laws and governance to prevent the destruction of our planet, The People’s Book Prize Winner for 2011. The second edition of this book was published in 2015. Her second book, Earth is our Business was published in May 2012 – this book takes a deeper look at how Ecocide law shall play out for business and includes the draft Ecocide Act and indictments used in the mock Ecocide trial held in the UK Supreme Court in 2011. Her third book I Dare you to be Great was published in 2014.
Polly was named one of the World’s Top 10 Visionary Thinkers by the Ecologist and celebrated as The Planet’s Lawyer by the 2010 Change Awards. Polly was a Celt (born 1968), based in the UK. She loved nothing more than sharing a dram with friends and is a lover of raw food.
Polly was the winner of Utstickarpriset 2016.
