Ian Mason began his professional life in insurance before qualifying as a barrister in London, building a legal practice focused on land, housing, and property law. His search for the deeper moral foundations of law and market economics led him to the School of Philosophy and Economic Science (SPES) in London, where he has been a student and lecturer since 1971.
Between 2008 and 2019, Mason served as Principal of the School, leading public education programs that integrate practical non-dual philosophy (Advaita) with economic reform. Prior to becoming Principal, he headed the School’s Economics and Law departments, where he co-developed the popular Economics-with-Justice course series aimed at restoring ethical responsibility and natural justice to economic theory.
A pioneer in the field of Earth Jurisprudence and “Wild Law”, Mason has worked alongside global environmental organisations like the Gaia Foundation to promote legal frameworks that recognise the rights of nature and sustainable land use. In 2013, he was a featured panellist and contributor for the United Nations General Assembly Interactive Dialogue on Harmony with Nature at UN Headquarters in New York.
Mason broadcasts regularly on the weekly web series Economics Live, exploring the implications of Economics with Justice for contemporary living, the development of society and the future of economics.
